Previously known as Marriage Guidance or Marriage Counselling, Relationship and Couples Counselling offers support for any relationship difficulties you may be facing as a couple or individual. You do not need to be in a couple to come for relationship counselling.
Our trained relationship counsellors can help you gain new skills, work on better interaction and reflect on unhelpful patterns of behaviour. This service is available to anyone aged 18 or over.
Our counsellors are trained to explore all kinds of relationship issues for couples or individuals. These include,
Together we will first help you to identify and clarify the difficulties you are facing in your relationship/s within an initial meeting. We will ask to see all those in the relationship individually as well as together before deciding on the best way forward, this means it will generally take three sessions (two individually and one together) to complete your initial meeting.
If relationship counselling is the best way forward, you will begin ongoing counselling sessions - anything between six and twelve sessions is usual, but it will depend on the issues that you want to address. This can be discussed with your counsellor within your first meeting, as well as any expectations you have for counselling.
We recognise that Relate may not always be the right fit. In these instances, our main priority is that you receive the best support possible, and we will work with you to find and access the support you need from another source.
"I am able to self-evaluate and look at both positives and negatives. Counselling has helped me and my ex-partner to communicate with less arguing. I am far less anxious now that we have worked through many issues.”
"We worked through our problems at our own pace, and we are now in a much better place. Our relationship now feels strong, and we can deal with problems together in a much better way than we could. I would encourage others to use the professional services. The programmes are very helpful and success is achievable when both partners are willing to persevere and make changes. "
